Why this why now

Dietary and nutritional needs change throughout life, and being able to plan diets for the needs of different people is important to minimise any potential consequences of poor diet. This builds on work in Year 8 around the name, source and function of different nutrients, and the application of healthy eating guidelines. Going forward, pupils will have the knowledge, skills and strategies to plan diets and make meals for themselves and others, now and in the future.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils can describe the energy and nutrients provided by food and drinks, and their important functions for health.
  • Pupils can modify recipes and cooking methods to help meet current healthy eating messages.
  • Pupils can use the Eatwell Guide, food portion and size, and 8 tips to evaluate and justify healthier changes to a diet.
  • Pupils can read food labels, choosing those lower in fat, salt and sugars.
  • Pupils will know that people have an allergy to specific ingredients, such as wheat flour, nuts and milk.

Health and dietary needs

In this unit pupils explore key nutritional needs throughout life, and allergies, food labelling, portion size and health conditions. They plan dishes and menus, and describe how diets can be changed for health to meet the needs of different groups of people.
