Formation of M, N, W and V

Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can form the capital letters M, N, W and V.

Key learning points

  1. The capital letters M, N, W and V all have the same starting point and go down and back up.
  2. These capital letters are formed by one continuous movement and you do not need to lift your pencil.

Keywords

  • Continuous movement - the smooth movement made when writing without lifting the pencil from the paper

  • Diagonal line - a line that slants or leans

  • Vertical line - a straight line that goes up and down

Common misconception

Children may not use or know the letter names and rely on the phoneme the letter makes instead.

Use the teaching of the formation as an opportunity to revisit letter names vs. letter sounds (e.g. M vs. mmmm)

Teacher tip

Remind children that they can keep their pencils on the page to form each of these letters in one continuous movement
