Why this why now

In this unit, pupils develop the control and precision needed to form capital letters accurately, building on their lowercase letter formation skills. By learning to write the days of the week, pupils apply their understanding of both lowercase and capital letter formation. This practice helps them to bridge the gap between basic letter formation and more complex writing, while making meaningful connections with the broader English curriculum. This unit prepares pupils for future learning by refining the precise movements and coordination required in the upcoming unit on forming numerals.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Know the difference between a capital letter and a lower case letter.
  • The grapheme phoneme correspondence (GPC) for all 26 letters of the alphabet.
  • The ability to hold a pencil in a comfortable tripod grip.
  • The ability to write recognisable print letters, most of which are correctly formed.
  • Showing accuracy and care when drawing.
  • Some knowledge of letter names.
  • Demonstration of strength, balance and coordination.
