Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Re-reading what has been written so far will help to know what instruction will come next.
  2. Each instruction should be numbered followed by sequencing language, such as ‘4. Finally,’.
  3. Each instruction should include a verb to tell the reader what they should be doing.
  4. Command sentences in non-urgent instruction pages start with a capital letter and end with a full stop.
  5. Reading your writing back and checking the success criteria helps to check that our writing makes sense

Keywords

  • Instruction - tells us to do something

  • Command - a type of simple sentence that tells someone to do something and can end with an exclamation mark

  • Verb - a doing or a being word

  • Sequence - following the order in which a series of events happens

  • Simple sentence - a sentence about one idea that makes complete sense

Common misconception

Pupils may not recall what they have written so far.

Spend time in the lesson re-reading what they have written so far. Then, refer back to when you made the sandwiches to sequence the final instructions.
