      Why this why now

This unit builds on Year 4 by extending pupils' skills to writing longer sections at speed. Learning to reflect on the differences in their handwriting when writing quickly versus slowly, promotes ownership and encourages pupils to find a balance between precision and speed. They also gain independence by choosing between pen and pencil to match the task. Practising longer sections in cursive, helps pupils to embed text conventions from the Year 5 curriculum as well as punctuation and grammar rules. This unit prepares pupils for the more complex demands of the final handwriting unit in Year 6.

      Prior knowledge requirements

      • The ability to hold a pencil or pen in a comfortable tripod grip.
      • The ability to use joined-up handwriting, including the four letter joins.
      • The formation of capital letters.
      • Knowledge of which letters to join and leave un-joined.
