Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. There are four types of noun: common, proper, collective and abstract.
  2. Nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs build clauses.
  3. Determiners introduce nouns.
  4. Modal verbs are a type of auxiliary verb.

Common misconception

Pupils may struggle to see adverbs as doing more than saying 'how' verbs are done.

Adverbs modify verbs by saying when, where, how or to what extent they are done - encourage pupils to look for words that modify the verb.

Keywords

  • Noun - a naming word for people, places or things

  • Verb - a doing, being or having word

  • Adjective - a word that describes a noun

  • Adverb - a word that can describe a verb or an adjective

  • Determiner - a word that introduces a noun in a clause or phrase

Complete lessons on determiners and adverbs are found in the accompanying Year 6 'Key terminology, including determiners, fronted adverbials and parenthesis' Grammar unit.
