Why this why now
This unit uses and builds on all the taught punctuation rules from the primary curriculum, the majority of which are completed in the Year 6 grammar unit, 'Punctuation'. There is no new learning in this unit, except around the term 'Standard English', as it serves as a revision unit before pupils undertake KS2 SATS. Higher level punctuation rules for using colons, semi-colons and bullet points are reviewed as well as the full range of sentence structures with all associated comma rules expected by the end of KS2. This unit prepares pupils for end of KS2 testing in preparation for KS3.
Prior knowledge requirements
- There are different word classes in English.
- A main clause is a group of words that contains a verb and makes complete sense.
- A subordinate clause is a group of words that contains a verb that does not make complete sense.
- Joining clauses together forms different sentence types.
- There are three sentence types: simple, compound and complex.
- Punctuation marks signal specific things to the reader.
- Some punctuation marks have more than one purpose.
- Sentences can be formed in the past, present and future tense in different forms: simple, progressive and perfect.
- The verb carries the tense of a clause.
- Practising test-style questions improves accuracy and stamina during test performance.
