Key learning points
- In French the SSC (sound-symbol correspondence) [th] makes a t sound, as in 'théâtre'.
- Soixante-dix is 70, quatre-vingts is 80, quatre-vingt-dix is 90 and cent is one hundred.
- In France, the euro symbol € comes after the number and a comma is used instead of a decimal point: 40,25 €.
- The verb payer (to pay) has two different spellings in the singular form: je paie / je paye.
- When using the pronoun 'it' as a direct object in French, we use either 'le' (masculine) or 'la' (feminine).
Keywords
[th] - SSC (sound symbol correspondence) pronounced as in 'thé'
Direct object pronoun - replaces the noun receiving the action of the verb e.g. me, you, it, them: il me regarde - he is looking at me
Le, la, l' - direct object pronoun meaning 'it', ‘him’ or ‘her’ in the masculine and feminine forms: je la trouve, I am finding it
Common misconception
Numbers 70, 80 and 90 are one word numbers in French, just like 20 (vingt), 30 (trente), 40 (quarante) etc.
In French, the numbers 70 (soixante-dix), 80 (quatre-vingts), and 90 (quatre-vingt-dix) are not single-word numbers. Unlike 20 (vingt), 30 (trente), and 40 (quarante)—which are single words—70, 80, and 90 are constructed using compound expressions.
