Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Add 'est-ce que' to the start of a question sentence, on its own or after a question word.
      2. The modal verbs 'devoir', 'vouloir', pouvoir' and 'savoir' give information about another verb.
      3. Modal verbs are usually followed by a second verb, which is always in the infinitive form
      4. Add '-ment' to the feminine form of most adjectives to make them into an adverb.
      5. When/where adverbs normally come at the start/end of a sentence and how (often) adverbs after the first verb.

      Keywords

      • Adverb - word that describes a verb or an adjective

      • Modal verb - verb of necessity or possibility used with a 2nd verb in infinitive e.g., must, can, want

      Common misconception

All adverbs that tell us how and how often something happens come straight after the verb and we add -ment to all adjectives to make them adverbs.

There are exceptions to the adverb placement and adverb formation rules. For example 'parfois' usually comes at the start of a sentence. 'Dur' is an adjective which often doesn't change even when it is used as an adverb with certain verbs.

      Teacher tip

You could use mini whiteboards in the final writing task for whole class assessment for learning. Have students show each sentence individually to provide live feedback and address any misconceptions as they arise.
