Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

Key learning points

  1. Revisiting key phonics, vocabulary and grammar helps to embed knowledge.
  2. [a], [oi], [i], [ou], [u], [(e)au], [eu] and [é] are common French sounds.
  3. 'Je', 'tu' 'il', 'elle', 'nous', 'vous', 'ils' and 'elles' are French pronouns. Verbs change to match the pronoun.
  4. Yes/no and information questions can be formed with inversion: swap the subject and the verb '(quand) sors-tu ce soir ?'
  5. To make a sentence negative, use 'ne ... pas' around the verb.

Keywords

  • SSC - sound-symbol correspondence, relationship between letters and their sounds

  • Negation - two elements e.g. ne … pas around the main verb expressing negative meaning

  • Inversion - when the subject pronoun and the verb switch place to form a question

Common misconception

The SSCs [ou] and [u] make the same sound in French.

The SSCs [ou] and [u] are similar but make different sounds in French. [ou] is pronounced as in 'nous' and [u] is pronounced as in 'tu'.

Teacher tip

In the speaking task C5, you may wish to ask pupils to form sentences of their own to describe the photo, in addition to the five translations in the exercise.
