Why this why now

This unit builds on pupils' prior understanding of -ir verb patterns, question-forming and verbal negation by first recapping familiar language before adding in new verbs and negative structures. Pupils use their prior and new knowledge to build questions and positive and negative statements to communicate in a culturally rich context, discovering many of France's famous attractions. Direct object pronouns, touched on at KS3, are also consolidated and expanded to cover all persons in new contexts, preparing pupils for further work on the preverbal position of a range of pronouns at KS4.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know all subject pronouns (je, tu, il(s), elle(s), on nous, vous) and their different translations.
  • Pupils can recognise -ir verbs like choisir, partir and venir in the present tense.
  • Pupils know that many adjectives are positioned after the noun, but some come before the noun.
  • Pupils can use 'il y a' to say what there is/are and 'il n'y a pas de' to say what there isn't/aren't.
  • Pupils know that the masculine and plural definite articles contract after à and de.
  • Pupils know that questions are formed using inversion, intonation or by adding est-ce que.
  • Pupils can use ne...pas and ne...jamais to negate sentences.

Communication and the world around us: 'La France est belle !'

In this unit, pupils re-examine verbs like choisir, partir and venir in the present, and add to this verbs like ouvrir. They revisit questions, pre-nominal adjectives, contraction of articles after à and de, and expand knowledge of negation. A further focus is the use of direct object pronouns.
