Key learning points

  1. Use le/la/les (definite articles) to mean 'the' and un/une/des (indefinite articles) to mean 'a' or 'some' in plural.
  2. Use un/une (indefinite article) to describe 'whole' things, and du/de la/de l' (partitive article) for 'parts' of things
  3. Indefinite articles (un, une, des) and partitive articles (du, de la, de l', des) change to 'de' after a negative.
  4. The imperfect tense is used to describe what 'was happening' or what you 'were doing' or what you 'used to' do.
  5. Quebec is the largest of the thirteen provinces of Canada and its official language is French.

Keywords

  • Imperfect tense - tense used to describe how things were or used to be in the past, or to say what was happening

Common misconception

Use the same articles for nouns after negative structures.

After a negative structures (e.g. 'je n'ai pas'), indefinite and partitive articles change to 'de', e.g. 'je n'ai pas d'information' - 'I don't have any information'.
