Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

Key learning points

  1. Some regular present participles are: partant, venant, ouvrant, choisissant, entendant, prenant, connaissant, écrivant.
  2. The present participle of faire is 'faisant'; 'faisant de' + noun means making something.
  3. The irregular present participles of être and avoir are 'étant' and 'ayant'.
  4. Extended reading texts can be exploited to enrich our thematic vocabulary and use of complex structures.

Keywords

  • Present participle - a verb form used to show how something happens, something that is happening at the same time, or to give a reason for something

Common misconception

Present participles are always preceeded by 'en'.

The present participles 'ayant', 'étant' and 'faisant de' can be used without the preposition 'en' e.g. 'Ayant une grand-mère musulmane, je sais beaucoup sur l'Islam' - having a muslim grandmother, I know a lot about Islam.
