      Key learning points

      1. Montreal is the largest city in the province of Quebec in Canada. It is a bilingual city.
      2. When giving directions or instructions to a stranger, use the formal imperative 'vous' form.
      3. [oi] sounds like 'trois' and [oy] sounds like 'envoyer'
      4. ‘Être’ is irregular in the imperative. The 'tu' form is 'sois' and the 'vous' form is 'soyez'.

      Keywords

      • Imperative - a mood used to tell somebody to do something or give instructions or commands.

      Common misconception

A subject pronoun or noun is always required when using a verb in French.

When using the imperative, neither subject pronoun nor noun is required. Match the spelling of the verb to the person or people who are being instructed.

      Teacher tip

For the phonics task (B1), teachers may wish to give students who need greater support a group of words, including some distractors, that students choose from to write in the gaps in the text.

      Equipment

Mini whiteboard and pen, plus pen and paper are useful, if available.
