Key learning points
- [eu] is pronounced closed as in 'deux' and [eu/œu] is pronounced open as in 'cœur', and [r] is pronounced as in 'rue'.
- An agent noun is a noun describing a person or object doing the action of a verb.
- Agent nouns can be created by adding -eur or -ateur to the verb stem e.g. consommer- consommateur.

Common misconception
All agent nouns are formed by adding either -eur or -ateur to the stem of the verb.
Most agent nouns follow this rule but there are exceptions, for example éduquer - to educate, becomes éducateur - educator. A stem change is needed here.
