Key learning points

  1. Including a range of direct object, indirect object and emphatic pronouns and possessive adjectives adds complexity.
  2. When describing a picture mention: people, action, location, mood and season.
  3. It is important to listen carefully for question type and tense in conversation questions.

Keywords

  • Possessive adjective - a word that goes before a noun to show ownership or belonging

  • Direct object pronoun - replaces the noun receiving the action of the verb e.g. me, you, it, them

  • Indirect object pronoun - replaces the person, people or thing(s) that the verb action is done to, when the action is to me, for you, to them

  • Emphatic pronoun - used to emphasise the subject of a sentence, in comparisons, and after c'est

Common misconception

Direct object pronouns can be used with verbs followed by 'à' like 'demander' and 'donner'.

Indirect object pronouns should be used with these verbs because you ask 'of' and give 'to' someone in French. In English, the 'to' is often dropped with these kinds of verbs e.g. 'je lui donne un cadeau' I give (to) him, her a present.
