      Learning outcome

I can describe how recycling, employment, green spaces, transport and affordable and energy-efficient homes are improving sustainability and quality of life in Liverpool.

      Key learning points

      1. Liverpool has a number of strategies involving housing such as affordability and energy efficiency.
      2. Liverpool has low rates of recycling. To address this it is using strategies such as education campaigns.
      3. Some employment in Liverpool is low paid. Strategies to address this include paying the real national living wage.
      4. Green spaces have been considered in Liverpool’s city centre though the URBAN GreenUP project.
      5. Liverpool is developing integrated transport systems to encourage use of public transport.

      Keywords

      • Sustainability - meeting the needs of today without compromising future needs

      • Quality of life - wellbeing of individuals or groups of people measured by criteria other than wealth such as housing, employment and environmental factors

      • Strategy - a plan to achieve a long-term aim

      Common misconception

Sustainable development is all about the environment.

One pillar of sustainable development is the environment but sustainable development is only achieved when social and economic aspects are also considered.

      Teacher tip

Urban development is happening all around the country. You could enrich this lesson by investigating local development plans and get pupils to consider how social, economic and environmental pillars are being considered to ensure sustainability and improvements to quality of life.
