      Lesson details

I can ask and respond to questions to discuss what I and others do, and know how to use a bilingual dictionary.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. [eu] sounds the same as [äu] and is pronounced as in 'Deutschland'.
      2. Form closed questions by swapping the position of the subject and verb in a statement.
      3. Form open questions by placing a question word in front of a closed question.
      4. A bilingual dictionary is split into two halves. The German side has English translations, and vice versa.
      5. Dictionaries indicate what part of speech a word is, e.g., noun, verb, adjective.

      Keywords

      • [eu] - pronounced as in 'Deutschland'

      • Question - seeks information

      • Statement - gives information

      • Part of speech - refers to a type of word, such as a noun, verb, adjective

      Common misconception

A bilingual dictionary lists words from A-Z in one long list.

A bilingual dictionary is split into two sections. These is German to English, and English to German. Each section lists words from A-Z. To find the English meaning of a German word, look for it in the German to English section, and vice versa.

      Teacher tip

If paper dictionaries are unavailable, consider using online dictionaries in a school computer room.

      Equipment

Bilingual German - English dictionaries are useful for this lesson, as is access to an online bilingual dictionary.
