Key learning points

  1. The sound-symbol correspondence [ie] is pronounced as in 'Liebe'.
  2. The sound-symbol correspondence [ei] is pronounced as in 'frei'.
  3. Pronouns replace nouns. Subject pronouns replace the noun doing the action of the verb.
  4. After most verbs, use direct object pronouns (accusative case), e.g., 'Ich habe ihn.'
  5. After certain verbs or prepositions, indirect object pronouns (dative case) are used, e.g., 'Ich helfe ihm'.

Keywords

  • [ie] - pronounced as in 'Liebe'

  • [ei] - pronounced as in 'frei'

  • Subject pronoun - replaces the noun doing the action of the verb, e.g., I, you, she, they

  • Direct object pronoun - replaces the noun receiving the action of the verb, e.g., me, you, it, them

  • Indirect object pronoun - replaces the noun indirectly receiving the action of the verb, e.g., to me, to you, to it, to them

Common misconception

Use the same word order as English when using indirect object pronouns.

In German, the indirect object pronoun comes straight after the verb, not at the end of the sentence. For example, 'Musik ist mir wichtig.' - 'Music is important to me.'.
