Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

Key learning points

  1. Nouns are often the subject of a sentence. Sometimes, nouns are replaced by pronouns.
  2. Subject pronouns show the grammatical gender of the subject, e.g., ‘das Lied ist toll’ - ‘es ist toll’.
  3. Object pronouns show the grammatical gender of the object, e.g., ‘ich sehe den Mann’ - ‘ich sehe ihn’.
  4. Use the accusative case with direct object pronouns, e.g., ‘ich sehe ihn’.

Keywords

  • Subject pronoun - replaces the noun doing the action of the verb, e.g., I, you, she, they

  • Object pronoun - replaces the noun receiving the action of the verb, e.g., me, you, it, them

  • Accusative case - case used for the direct object in a sentence, after most verbs and some prepositions

Common misconception

'Es' is the only word used to translate 'it' in German.

'Es' is for neuter nouns or abstract ideas. Use the correct subject or object pronouns according to the grammatical gender of the noun they replace.

Teacher tip

Encourage students to use appropriate intonation and emotion in their voices when reading aloud the jokes.
