Add and subtract two from odd numbers within 10

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can add or subtract two from odd numbers within 10

      Key learning points

      1. Adding two to an odd number gives the odd number after.
      2. Subtracting two from an odd number gives the odd number before.
      3. When we count forwards in odd numbers, we add two more each time.
      4. When we count backwards in odd numbers, we subtract two each time. The result is two less.

      Keywords

      • Odd - Any integer (not a fraction) that cannot be divided exactly by 2

      • Even - Any integer that can be divided exactly by 2 is an even number. The last digit is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8

      • Two more

      • Two less

      Common misconception

Children may incorrectly identify the odd number 'before' or 'after' the one given.

Provide practice in the form of missing number problems where children must identify the odd numbers before or after one given. Do this until fluent. Initially, allow children to use a number line. Remove this scaffold once feeling more confident.

      Teacher tip

The sequence of steps in this lesson are the same as those in that for adding and subtracting one, except now we are using children's knowledge of odd numbers 'before' and 'after'. Find time to practise counting forwards and backwards in odd numbers until children are fluent in this pattern.
