Common misconception
Children may not be able to accurately represent the story as an equation.
Ensure that children are able to say what each number represents in a given equation using the story as a scaffold before asking them to write their own equations to represent ‘First, then, then, now’ stories.
Represent augmentation on a number line, clearly demonstrating the two increases in quantity. This representation will prepare children for bridging through ten, covered later.
