Use a 'First, then, then, now' story to add three addends

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use a 'First, then, then, now' story to add three addends.

      Key learning points

      1. A 'First … then … then … now' story can represent an addition with three addends.
      2. The addition of three addends can be represented as three different objects on a ten frame.
      3. The addition of three addends can be represented as three steps on a number line.
      4. The addition of three addends can be represented as an equation.

      Keywords

      • Addends - Any of the numbers that are added together.

      • First - Before anything else.

      • Then - After something in time.

      • Now - At the present time.

      Common misconception

Children may not be able to accurately represent the story as an equation.

Ensure that children are able to say what each number represents in a given equation using the story as a scaffold before asking them to write their own equations to represent ‘First, then, then, now’ stories.

      Teacher tip

Represent augmentation on a number line, clearly demonstrating the two increases in quantity. This representation will prepare children for bridging through ten, covered later.
