Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. When comparing different heights and lengths, know the language used varies depending on what we are describing.
  2. The ___ is taller / shorter than the ___.
  3. The ___ is longer / shorter than the ___.
  4. When travelling, some objects travel further, and some objects travel less far.

Keywords

  • Taller than - an object has more height than another.

  • Longer than - an object has more length than another.

  • Shorter than - an object has less height or length than another.

  • Further - an object has travelled further than another or a distance has more length than another.

  • Less far - an object has not travelled as far as another or a distance has less length than another.

Common misconception

Inaccurate use of language e.g. 'Alex is longer than Sam' instead of 'Alex is taller than Sam'.

Encourage children to verbalise the comparisons they make eg. provide sentence scaffolds and ask them to repeat key sentences as a class.

There is no need to assign a numerical value to attributes being compared at this stage e.g. Alex is taller than Sam, based on visual comparison rather than on quantified heights. There is a strong emphasis on using correct language in this unit.
