Explain that items can be compared using weight and mass

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can compare items according to their mass.

      Key learning points

      1. Know the language used when comparing mass, the ___ is heavier / lighter than the ___.
      2. Know when comparing items that are equal to each other in mass, we use the language of 'the same' or 'is equal to'.

      Keywords

      • Heavier than - an object has more weight than another

      • Lighter than - an object has less weight than another

      • The same - exactly the same amount or value

      • Equal to - exactly the same amount or value

      Common misconception

May find it hard to feel whether an object is heavier, lighter or equal to the mass of another.

Model using yourself as a scale in different ways - using both hands, picking one object up after another, then having one in each hand.

      Teacher tip

In this lesson, we compare objects children may have never seen before. Try to share real-life pictures / videos of the objects to help children visualise their size.
