Represent multiples of ten in an expression or an equation

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can represent multiples of ten in a calculation.

      Key learning points

      1. Multiples of ten can be represented with addition of tens.
      2. 10 + 10 + 10 is equal to three tens which is equal to 30
      3. An expression shows the number of groups being added.
      4. An equation includes the sum or total shown using =

      Keywords

      • Multiple - A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by another whole number.

      • Expression - Contains one or more values, where each value is separated by an operator such as the addition symbol +

      • Equation - An equation is used to show that one number or calculation is equal to another.

      Common misconception

Children may think that each group of ten is worth more than the last when we count up in tens.

Ensure children understand that we count all as we go along to find how many things are in a group, the last number we say tells us how many there are.

      Teacher tip

Take time for children to practise writing expressions and equations using + and = symbols. Saying these aloud using 'plus' and 'is equal to' will develop their understanding and use of the abstract symbols.
