      Common misconception

      Pupils do not space numbers equally or consistently on a number line.

      Show pupils examples of number lines both horizontal and vertical and draw attention to the gaps between numbers. Talk to children about the equal size 'jumps' between them to support understanding.

      Practical creation of a number line can be a useful experience for pupils in this lesson as opposed to viewing or drawing. Use large number cards and a washing line or similar to encourage estimation, placement and reasoning using understanding of teen numbers.
