Key learning points
- The numbers 11 - 19 can be positioned on a number line.
- Saying the teen numbers as one ten and __ ones helps you to position them on a number line.
- There is a link with the position of the numbers 1 - 9 on a number line and the numbers 11 - 29.
- Knowing one more and one less than a number to 20 can help to estimate the position the teen numbers on a number line.
Keywords
One more - One more than is when there is a greater amount by one or another item in the set.
One less - One less than is when there is a smaller value by one.
Estimate - To find a value that is close enough to the right answer, usually with some careful thought involved.
Common misconception
Pupils do not space numbers equally or consistently on a number line.
Show pupils examples of number lines both horizontal and vertical and draw attention to the gaps between numbers. Talk to children about the equal size 'jumps' between them to support understanding.
