Explain what odd and even numbers are and the difference between them

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain what odd and even numbers are and the difference between them.

      Key learning points

      1. Odd and even numbers alternate.
      2. Between two even numbers there is an odd number.
      3. Between two odd numbers there is an even number.
      4. Identify odd and even numbers using both the number names and numerals.

      Keywords

      • Odd - Any number that cannot be divided exactly by 2. The last digit is 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9.

      • Even - Any number that can be divided exactly by 2. The last digit is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8.

      Common misconception

Children may see the pairs in an odd number and think it is an even number.

Ensure children are looking for the extra one that makes a number odd. Provide opportunities to group other odd sets e.g. pairs of socks, pairs of hands / feet and realising an odd number always has an 'odd' one.

      Teacher tip

Use a variety of representations of numbers to sort into odd and even and discuss what's the same and different about them. What makes an even number even and an odd number odd? Encourage pupils to talk about pairs when discussing representations of numbers and look for the extra one in odd numbers.
