      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can say ordinal numbers and use them to describe position.

      Key learning points

      1. Know the ordinal number names are first, second, third, fourth and fifth.
      2. Know that ordinal numbers can be used to describe position in relation to something.
      3. Understand how ordinal numbers are different from cardinal numbers.

      Keywords

      • First - First means before anything else.

      • Second - Second is the position or object which comes after the first one.

      • Third - Third is the position or object which comes after the second one.

      • Fourth - Fourth is the position or object which comes after the third one.

      • Fifth - Fifth is the position or object which comes after the fourth one.

      Common misconception

May initially struggle with first and second as they do not contain the number names one and two.

Link these names to their shortened written forms (1st and 2nd) so children can see their relationship to one and two.

      Teacher tip

Once again, explore these slides practically. Recreate the scenarios eg. line children up and identify their position in the line, ask children to report who was in what position in the queue for lunch and rotate these orders where possible.
