Comparing and ordering numbers 0-20 practically

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

You can compare and order the numbers 0-20 practically.

      Key learning points

      1. Highlight language such as 15 is more than 10.
      2. What number comes before or is one less than 14?
      3. Which number comes after or is one more than 14?

      Keywords

      • One more - The next number in the count is one more than the number before and there will be one more object in the set.

      • One less - The previous number in the count is one less than the next number and there will be one fewer object in the set.

      Common misconception

You can compare numbers that are more than one apart and say which numbers are one more or one less.

Make it clear whether pupils are comparing numbers or whether they are giving the values that are one more and one less.

      Teacher tip

You may decide not to show all slides to pupils. Be clear in the lesson as to when pupils are ordering a set of numbers rather than ordering all the numbers to 20. Make sure pupils know when they are giving one more or one less rather than ordering.
