      Counting back from 20

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

You can count backwards from any number between 0 and 20.

      Key learning points

      1. Reciting the number words backwards from 20 by rote.
      2. Counting backwards from 20 to 0 using manipulatives to support understanding of the number before.
      3. Counting back from any number to any number.

      Keywords

      • Count back - Reciting the numbers in reverse order to count backwards or down from a given number to 20.

      • Before - The number before refers to the previous number in the count.

      Common misconception

Knowing the number before when counting backwards.

Giving 2 or 3 numbers to establish a pattern then reducing to 2 and then just the given number.

      Teacher tip

This lesson can be taught with the slides as teacher notes and you may decide not to show them to pupils. Repeat commonly missed numbers in tasks and checks. The more opportunities to practice, the more secure pupils will become.
