Identify the patterns and relationships between the 5 and 10 times tables

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can identify the patterns and relationships between the 5 and 10 times tables.

      Key learning points

      1. All multiples of 10 are also multiples of 5
      2. Multiples of 10 have a ones digit of 0
      3. Even multiples of 5 have a ones digit of 0, and odd multiples of 5 have a ones digit of 5
      4. Multiples of 10 are double the value of multiples of 5
      5. Multiples of 5 are half the value of multiples of 10

      Keywords

      • Multiple - A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by another whole number.

      • Odd - Any integer that cannot be divided exactly by 2

      • Even - Any integer that can be divided exactly by 2 is an even number. The last digit is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8

      • Double - To become twice as many / to multiply by two.

      • Half - One of two equal parts of a whole. To divide into two equal parts.

      Common misconception

Children may struggle to recall multiplication facts related to the 5 and 10 times tables.

Using times table charts where needed throughout this unit will support children in recalling facts and enable them to focus on seeing the relationships, e.g. between the 5 and 10 times table. These can be used until children become more fluent.

      Teacher tip

Repetition in using the 10 times table to help solve 5 times table problems, or vice versa, will enable children to see the efficiency of using what they know rather than resorting to calculating each time. Each time, present these facts alongside each other, rather than separately.
