Lesson details
Key learning points
- When the whole has been divided into three equal parts, each part is one-third of the whole.
- You can find thirds of objects, shapes and sets of objects.
Keywords
Third or one-third - One of three equal parts of a whole. To divide into three equal parts.
Common misconception
Children can find it difficult to see if the three parts are equal, particularly when they are presented in different orientations rather than horizontal and vertical lines.
Allow children to handle practical objects and cut-outs of shapes that have been divided into thirds so they can rotate them and see them in different orientations.
