Identify and explain each part of a multiplication equation

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can identify and explain each part of a multiplication equation.

      Key learning points

      1. The number of groups is called a factor in a multiplication equation.
      2. The group size is also called a factor in a multiplication.
      3. The number of objects overall is called the product of the multiplication.

      Keywords

      • Product - A product is the result of two or more numbers multiplied together.

      • Multiplication equation - An equation is used to show that one number or calculation is equal to another. Multiplication equations use × and = symbols.

      • Factor - A factor is a number which exactly divides another whole number.

      Common misconception

Children may confuse the terminology of factor and product and therefore be inaccurate when describing equations.

Take time to clearly model use of terminology and ask questions such as: 'What does the 3 represent?' 'What does the 5 represent?' 'What does the 15 represent?' Continue to explicitly use key terms such as factor and products within explanation.

      Teacher tip

This lesson is about multiplication equations. Children will learn about what the product is and how to calculate this. Provide lots of opportunities for pupils to explain what the different parts of a multiplication equation represent. Continue to skip count in 2s 5s and 10s to find the product.
