Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Repeated addition can be written as a multiplication.
  2. The x symbol represents times.
  3. 3 groups of 5 can be represented as 5 + 5 + 5 or as 3 x 5
  4. 3 represents the number of groups and 5 represents the number in each group.

Keywords

  • Multiplication - The basic idea of multiplication is repeated addition, adding a number to itself multiple times. The result of a multiplication is a product.

  • Groups / grouping - A set of things with an identity.

Common misconception

Pupils may not understand how to represent the repeated addition expression and a multiplication expression.

Encourage pupils to identify exactly how the equation relates to the image: with the questions ‘What does the 3 represent?’ ‘What does the 2 represent?’ ‘What does the 6 represent?’

This lesson is all about addition expression and multiplication expression. At this point, children are just understanding how the expression relates to the image, with no focus on the total number of items, such as eggs. Focus on confidence in the factors.
