Explore, discuss and identify shapes that are and are not circles

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can say if a shape is a circle or not and explain why.

      Key learning points

      1. Describe what the outside of a circle feels like.
      2. Identify shapes that are circles because they are round and the outside is always an equal distance from the centre.
      3. Identify shapes that are not circles and explain why.

      Keywords

      • Circle - A 2D shape that has one curved line which is always an equal distance from the centre.

      • Curved - A line or surface that is not straight or flat.

      • Centre - The middle of something.

      • Equal - The same.

      Common misconception

Children may think that ovals are also circles.

Emphasise that the outside of a circle is always an equal distance from the centre by exploring and drawing around different cut-outs.

      Teacher tip

A circle does not have any sides - we use 'curved line' rather than side. Try recreating the circle-drawing exercise on a large scale. Ask a child to stand in the 'middle', holding a piece of rope tightly. Walk round to draw a curved line with chalk.
