Explore, recognise and compare three different 3D shapes

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can recognise, name and compare three different 3D shapes.

      Key learning points

      1. Recognise objects that are similar shapes.
      2. 3D shapes have 3 dimensions and are not flat.
      3. A sphere is shaped like a ball.
      4. A cylinder has 2 flat circle faces.
      5. A cone has 1 vertex and 1 flat circle face.

      Keywords

      • Similar - When one thing is like something else.

      • Cone - A 3D shape with one vertex, one circular face and one curved surface.

      • Sphere - A 3D shape with one curved surface.

      • Cylinder - A 3D shape with two circular faces and one curved surface.

      Common misconception

Children might mix up words that sound alike e.g. similar and cylinder.

Allow additional practice for children to name shapes throughout the day, particularly those that are familiar within their environment.

      Teacher tip

Explore 3D shapes throughout the day. Talk about what they feel like and what different 3D shapes might be useful. For example, which shapes are good for building a tower? Which shapes could I use as wheels for my model of a car?
