Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Radiating patterns start in the middle and grow around the outside.
  2. A radiating pattern can be extended in different ways by choosing different pattern blocks.

Keywords

  • Radiating patterns - A pattern that starts in the middle and grows around the outside.

  • Middle - The centre.

  • Outside - The outer edge.

  • Extend - To make something longer or bigger.

Common misconception

Children may only extend in one direction, rather than in all directions beyond a central point.

Count the spaces to fill around the outside, and then count each pattern block as it is placed around the outside.

This entire unit protects time for children to play, to seek and explore patterns. This should be continued beyond the lesson. Provide pictures of radiating patterns that children can be inspired by and some that can be extended and corrected.
