      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain what temperature means and read scales in the context of temperature.

      Key learning points

      1. Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold something is.
      2. Temperature can be measured in degrees Celsius.
      3. A thermometer is a tool that can be used to measure temperature.
      4. The scale on a thermometer can count up in different amounts.

      Keywords

      • Temperature - A measure of how hot or cold something is.

      • Thermometer - A tool used to measure temperature.

      • Degrees - A unit of measure that is used to measure temperature.

      • Scale - A number line with equal divisions for equal values.

      Common misconception

Children may think that the higher the level of coloured liquid on a thermometer, the higher the temperature.

Explore plenty of examples of thermometers with different scales so that children can see that they need to look at the scale in order to compare two temperatures and not just the height of the coloured liquid.

      Teacher tip

When exploring temperature on scales, there are opportunities to calculate the difference between two temperatures. This is not included in this lesson but might be something you wish to explore. Some scales in this lesson have missing values, which could be labelled if required.
