Find different ways to sort 3D shapes

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can find different ways to sort 3D shapes.

      Key learning points

      1. 3D shapes can be sorted by their properties
      2. The properties of 3D shapes are the faces, edges and vertices

      Keywords

      • Faces - The flat 2D surfaces of a 3D shape.

      • Edges - The straight lines where two faces of a 3D shape meet.

      • Vertices - The corners of a shape where two or more edges meet.

      Common misconception

Children may still find it difficult to count the number of faces, vertices and edges on a 3D shape when they are looking at an image of that shape.

Provide 3D shapes for the children to handle. Encourage them to mark the faces, vertices and edges with a wipe-clean pen as they count. Talk about where the properties can be found on each shape e.g. a triangular prism has 3 vertices at each end.

      Teacher tip

Provide opportunities to handle different examples of 3D shapes, including familiar objects from the children's environment.
