Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. The numbers 1 to 12 show the hours on a clock face.

Keywords

  • Clock face - The front part of a clock with the numerals 1 to 12 written on it.

  • Hours - A unit of time.

  • O'clock - Used with the numbers 1 to 12 when telling the time to mean an exact hour.

Common misconception

Pupils will have lots of familiarity with linear number lines but will be less familiar with circular ones. They may not understand that in terms of time, 12 is often followed by 1

Take frequent opportunities outside of the lesson to practise counting around the clock so that pupils get used to the sequence ... 11, 12, 1, 2 ...

You may wish to deliver part of this lesson in the hall or outside. Pupils can construct clocks in pairs or groups and physically travel around the clock face they make. Digit cards, tiles and skipping ropes will aid the delivery of this lesson.
