Tell the time to the hour using the hour hand

Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can use the short hour hand to show the hour on a clock face.

Key learning points

  1. The short hand on a clock face shows which hour we are at or near.

Keywords

  • O'clock - Used with the numbers 1 to 12 when telling the time to mean an exact hour.

  • Hour hand - The small hand on a clock that points to the hour.

Common misconception

Pupils may see the minute hand as the hour hand, treating wherever the minute hand is pointing to as o'clock.

The lesson deliberately chooses to present clocks featuring just an hour hand to really focus in on its purpose. O'clock times with the hour hand and minute hand feature later in the unit. Explain to pupils that clocks do not only have an hour hand.

Teacher tip

The second cycle offers pupils the opportunity to use paper clips and a handless paper clock to show the time. An engaging alternative could be to create a large-scale clock, for example using skipping ropes to form a circle and an item such as a rounders bat to represent the hour hand.
