Use language relating to days of the week

Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can use the days of the week to describe events.

Key learning points

  1. There are 7 days in a week.
  2. The days of the week are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Keywords

  • Days of the week - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

  • Week - A time period of seven days.

Common misconception

It is not a misconception to say that Monday is the first day of the week. However, generally it is accepted that the first day of the week is Sunday, which is how it will be referred to in this unit.

Discuss with pupils that many people regard Monday as the first day of the week because it is the first day of the working week and that while both Sunday and Monday are acceptable, Sunday is more widely accepted.

Teacher tip

Ensure there is a weekly calendar visible in the classroom and that it is referred to as part of your daily routine. Today is ___________, today we have/will ___________. Use pupils to hold days of the week cards, swap them around and re-order as a class.
