Calculate the total value of a set of 2 p coins

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can skip count in twos to find the value of a set of 2 p coins.

      Key learning points

      1. A two-spot token can be used to represent one 2 p coin and has the same value as two pennies.
      2. The total value of set of 2 p coins can be found by skip counting in twos.
      3. Counting backwards can be used to check the set has been counted accurately.
      4. Skip counting in twos can only be used to count the complete set, if all the coins are 2 p coins.

      Keywords

      • Two-pence coins - A two-pence coin is a unit of money used in the UK. It has the same value as two one-pence coins.

      • 2 p - The value represented by two one-pence coins or one two-pence coins.

      • Value - Where referring to money, value refers to how much something is worth.

      • Twos - Another name for the multiples of two, or the even numbers.

      Common misconception

Children may not fully understand the concept of unitising and may confuse the number of coins with the total value. They may also count sets of coins containing 2 p coins and other coins in twos.

Use pre-money tokens with two spots alongside 2 p coins to start with to deepen the understanding of one coin representing a value of . Discuss deliberate errors, articulating thinking around why these cannot be correct.

      Teacher tip

It is important to spend some time dual counting 2 p coins to develop an understanding of unitising (where the value of each coin represents a quantity other than one) and continue this throughout lessons. Ensure activities in the lesson are explored practically with coins where possible.
