Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. A single coin can represent the same amount as several one-pennies.
  2. The value of a five-pence coin is not related to its size, shape, colour or quantity.
  3. A five-pence coin has a value of five-pence or 5 p.
  4. The value of a five-pence coin is equal to the value of five one-pence coins.
  5. We can represent a five-pence coin as a five-spot token.

Keywords

  • Five-pence coin - A five-pence coin is a unit of money used in the UK. It has the same value as five one-pence coins

  • Value - Where referring to money, value refers to how much something is worth.

  • Worth - Worth refers to the value that something has. In the context of money, it refers to how much money you would pay for something.

  • 5 p - This is the symbol to represent five pence, or a five-pence coin. The letter p denotes pence.

Common misconception

Children may think that larger coins or a greater number of coins represents a larger value.

Use pre-money tokens to draw attention to the value of the 5 p coin. When comparing 1 p and 5 p coins, ensure children swap coins for equivalent amounts to draw attention to the value of the coins as opposed to their size or quantity.

Ensure children have plenty of opportunities to explore real coins, as well toy money, as part of the activities within lessons and outside of them. Take care when showing pre-money tokens alongside both heads and tails faces of coins - make clear pre-money tokens each represent just one coin.
