Use column addition to solve problems

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use column addition to solve problems.

      Key learning points

      1. Estimate the answer first to improve your accuracy
      2. The addends are written in columns with the same value digits in the same column
      3. The sum is recorded underneath the addends with the same value digits in the same column

      Keywords

      • Addend - An addend is a number added to another.

      • Sum - The sum is the the total when numbers are added together.

      • Column addition - Column addition is a way of adding numbers by writing a number below another.

      Common misconception

Pupils may not refer to the size of the numbers when manipulating the digit cards.

Encourage them to talk about the size of the numbers and whether the digit cards represent ones, tens or hundreds.

      Teacher tip

Pupils would benefit from having the number cards 0-5 to help them solve the problems in the lesson.
