I can use known facts and strategies to efficiently calculate and check column addition.

Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Consider each calculation to see whether column addition is the most efficient method to use.
  2. Use strategies to help check calculations.
  3. Use estimation to give a value close to the correct answer.

Common misconception

Pupils may struggle with estimation, especially with thinking of numbers that are quick and easy to calculate with.

Pupils will probably have little or no experience of rounding but they will be able to think about the place value of numbers and give tens or hundreds numbers that are close. Number lines may be helpful for some children.

Keywords

  • Efficient - Being efficient means finding a way to solve a problem quickly whilst also maintaining accuracy.

  • Estimate - Estimation means to find a value that is close enough to the right answer, usually with some thought or calculation involved.

  • Regroup - The process of unitising and exchanging between place values is known as regrouping.

In this lesson, pupils will be comparing column addition with informal, mental methods and considering which strategy they should use. They will also be estimating answers and using other checking strategies.
