Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. If 1m = 100cm then 3m = 3 x 100cm = 300cm
  2. If 100cm = 1m then 500cm = 5 x 100cm = 5m

Keywords

  • Convert - To change a value or expression from one form to another, such as grams into kilograms.

  • Represent - Represent means to communicate mathematical ideas through models.

  • Calculate - Calculate means to choose one of the four operations to solve a problem.

Common misconception

Some pupils may need support with the decimal representation of measures and how to convert from larger units to smaller e.g. 1.2 l into ml.

Allow pupils to go back to previous work completed where necessary to see the units of measure divided up into 2, 4, 5 and 10 parts and represented with decimals, to provide a scaffold for them to use whilst completing the problems in this lesson.

The problems in the lesson have a party theme. If you chose to, you could present them practically - for example, using real squash alongside measuring cylinders or jugs. This would provide a stimulating and memorable learning experience for the pupils, with real life connections.
