Divide a 3-digit number using partitioning and representations (one regroup)
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can divide a 3-digit by a 1-digit number using partitioning and representations (one regroup).
Key learning points
- If the hundreds number is not a multiple of the divisor then the remainder is regrouped for tens.
- If the tens number is not a multiple of the divisor then the remainder is regrouped for ones.
- Place value resources can represent the division and the regrouping.
Keywords
Remainder - A remainder is an amount left over after division.
Partitioning - Partition means splitting a number into parts.
Regroup / regrouping - The process of unitising and exchanging between place values is known as regrouping.
Common misconception
Pupils may not regroup correctly.
Encourage children to identify what each digit in the dividend represents. Ask, 'Is this digit a multiple of the divisor?'
Teacher tip
Provide children with warm up games based on finding multiples or partitioning a 3-digit number into 100s 10s and 1s. Later, the focus would be to select the most helpful partitioning for each division question by finding the largest multiple.
