## Lesson details

### Key learning points

1. The whole has been divided into __ equal parts.
2. Each equal part is one-__ of the whole.
3. Fractions can be represented in different ways including names and notation.

### Common misconception

Pupils struggle to visualise when considering 3D parts and wholes and cannot identify a given fractional part of a 3D whole, particularly when presented on a screen as a picture.

Provide opportunities for pupils to experience fractional parts of 3D shapes in real life situations e.g. base 10 blocks or using cuboids such as small cereal variety boxes or photocopying paper boxes. Physical manipulation can support visualisation.

### Keywords

• Whole - The whole is all of a group or number.

• Part - A part is a section of the whole.

• Equal - Have the same quantity or value.

• Unequal - Do not have the same quantity or value.

Give children the chance to practise creating lines by starting with a part - this can get playful! Then they can highlight 1 part and describe the fraction using words, names and notation.
