Use estimation to support accurate calculation

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use estimation to support accurate calculation

      Key learning points

      1. Use times tables and place value to estimate the product of a 3-digit by a 1-digit multiplication.
      2. Use expanded short multiplication to multiply a 3-digit by a 1-digit number.
      3. Use short multiplication to multiply a 3-digit by a 1-digit number.

      Keywords

      • Expanded multiplication - A way of recording the steps of a calculation focusing on partitioning one or more factors and showing partial products.

      • Short multiplication - A way of recording using columns to set out and calculate a multiplication.

      • Estimate - To find a value that is close enough to the right answer, usually with some thought or calculation involved.

      Common misconception

Pupils attempt to estimate using approximations that do not allow for quick mental calculation.

Spend time estimating yourself and modelling the simplicity of it. Use estimations regularly to check the magnitude of an answer.

      Teacher tip

Estimation is a valuable skill to support checking answers. Take time to model estimation and checking final calculations against these to support pupils in seeing the value of estimating.
